Teachers can earn CPE credits by attending HAS functions

The Texas Archeological Society (TAS) is approved by the Texas Education Agency as a provider of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit hours. The Houston Archeological Society, as a regional society of the Texas Archeological Society, can offer classroom teachers valuable continuing education credit hours when they attend almost any HAS function including programs, field activities and workshops.

The Texas Archeological Association and their regional societies including the Houston Archeological Society offer several opportunities for earning CPE credit hours. At the TAS Annual Meeting, CPE hours can be earned for attending presentations, the poster session, and the banquet speaker's presentation. At the TAS Field School held in June each year, all lab work, survey, work in the field, teacher sessions, and other afternoon and evening presentations provide an opportunity to earn a considerable number of hours. Participation at TAS Academies, held several times a year, can also provide a teacher with many credit hours. One hour of appropriate TAS or HAS activity equals one hour of CPE credit.

In addition to workshops and fieldwork, The Houston Archeological Society invites teachers to attend its monthly program on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas University. These programs are announced well in advance on the HAS website at www.txhas.org. The Society has designed a certificate that will be awarded to teachers documenting the hours earned at each HAS program, workshop or field activity.

Teachers are required to earn 150 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credit hours every 5 years and 6 hours of this each year must be in gifted and talented training (GT). Teachers are responsible for documenting their CPE credit and turning in this information to their administrators. For more information about how HAS can help teachers earn CPE credit, please contact publicoutreach@txhas.org.
